This is my last week at home with just my little ones before my big kids join us for summer vacation. As a special activity to do with my preschoolers and toddler, we made Alphabet Cookies. I love this activity because it serves as a cooking activity, a snack, and alphabet practice. My kids helped me shape the dough into tiny snakes to form each letter of the alphabet. We made their names as well as spelled a few words. An added bonus is that it also is a fantastic and yummy fine motor activity. I hope you enjoy this recipe!
Alphabet Cookies
Ingredients:
4 ½ cups all-purpose flour
1 ½ cups butter
3 hard-cooked egg yolks
¾ cup sugar
3 raw egg yolks
2 teaspoons vanilla
Chocolate chips or sprinkles (optional)
Directions:
- Measure flour into a large bowl.
- Cut butter into small pieces and add to the flour. Mix with your fingers until the flour and butter form a fine crumb dough. (My kids loved using their clean hands to mix!)
- Mash cooked egg yolks with sugar and stir into the flour mixture.
- Blend raw egg yolks with vanilla and stir into the flour mixture.
- Press the mixture with your hands into a firm ball. Work with the dough at room temperature, but refrigerate it if you will bake it later.
- Preheat the oven to 300 degrees.
- Pinch off small pieces of dough and roll with your palms to make small ropes.
- Shape the ropes into letters.
- Decorate the letters with chocolate chips or sprinkles (optional).
- Place the letters on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper and bake for 25 minutes.
