I’m loving the new home centered, church supported change happening with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints! I truly love it! I’m scheduling time more often to simply be together with scriptures and my family. I’ll be honest and I’m keeping it super low-key at my house. Typically each evening I remember to gather my family together and lead a short scripture study using the Come Follow Me manual topics. I love the simplicity. I love the focus on just a few verses or working on better understanding one story or parable for the whole week. We read as a family, we discuss, we testify. Sometimes we watch a www.churchofjesuschrist.org themed video. My husband leads us in family prayer. Then we continue on with the bedtime routine. It’s a golden time in my house that brings my heart and home peace. It’s a magical 5 minutes that is changing our family for the better.
Along with the calmed down feeling of focusing on family and Jesus and saying goodbye to less important fluff, I am looking forward to General Conference this April. Our family loves being home together conference weekends the beginning of each April and October to hear from our prophet and church leaders. This year instead of planning attention grabbing quiet activities for my crew, I thought it would be memorable and worthwhile to bake something to teach my children about an ancestor. The first edible goodie that came to mind from an ancestor is teddy bear bread from my Grandma Irene Bernhoft.
My Grandma Bernhoft lived in North Dakota. She was an incredible cook and had the most impressive spread at her fancy dining room table. Whenever we visited she made it a special event to bake in her kitchen. Each grandchild got to make their very own teddy bear shaped loaf of bread! Oh how warm that kitchen felt as the bread baked. How soft and delicious was that fresh white bread! How proud I felt standing beside my grandmother making my very own loaf complete with raisin eyes!
This year as part of our special conference weekend, my children will get to enjoy the memory I have of my Grandma Bernhoft. Next conference I am already thinking of what else we could make that is tied to an ancestor memory. Maybe vinarterta, a layered prune cake from my Icelandic heritage. Maybe honey candy from my Grandma Ora Larsen’s recipe. I’m sure my husband has great ideas from his side of the family as well! I am going to love this new tradition incorporating family history feasting and the stories it will encourage me to remember and share each conference weekend!
What ancestor memory could you honor and bring alive with your children this conference weekend? I hope you enjoy family time together listening to the words of our prophet!
