Intentional Mornings for Moms: Breakfast Scripture Study with Kids

June 13, 2018
  • It’s hard to schedule family scripture time.

I believe in being honest with one another as moms so we don’t think we need to live up to fake facades. Here is my truth: My kids are typically half way through their meals by the time I am done serving everyone’s food and remember we need to say a prayer. So family scripture study is not always something I remember to do with my children. But I do have a few tools.

Once everyone has been served breakfast and the clock still has a few more minutes before the mad dash for shoes and out the door for the daily routine, I can read my children a morning scripture. What a beautiful way to begin our day as we gather around the kitchen table! I love inviting the spirit to be with my children through scripture as they are in our home and preparing to start a busy day.

I am grateful for the church’s resources for teaching my children scripture stories simply and easily.

Book of Mormon Stories, New Testament Stories, Old Testament Stories, and Doctrine & Covenants Stories are invaluable resources. We can read a page or chapter within a couple minutes. My children understand and love the illustrated scripture stories! You can get them inexpensively on the church’s website.

I also am a big fan of the Behold Your Little Ones; Nursery Manual. It is very easy to open the manual and teach a quick lesson without any preparation.

The Friend Magazine is also a favorite in my home. I am amazed at how often I get choked up reading a simple story to my children from The Friend that touches my heart.

The My LDS Preschool scripture story props and pictures are a great tool to bring out during scripture time to remind the children of stories we have learned and see if they can retell them.

Sometimes I enjoy sharing a quick quote or thought from a conference talk or prophet that has been on my mind that I can testify as truth to my children. Or I can share a favorite scripture verse or read the lyrics to a Primary song.

I find that when I take a quiet moment before my alarm technically needs to start buzzing and read from my scriptures or The Ensign, my day goes SO MUCH BETTER! My children are more darling. I am a happier mom. Situations seem more cheerful. The same is true for my whole family when we take a moment to share a scripture together. Our days go better.

I imagine as my children continue to grow that we will sit down in the quiet of the morning and read from our scriptures together more in depth. But for now I love the sweet simpleness of teaching my little children, ages 9 and under, about Jesus and His doctrines in an easy and meaningful way at the breakfast table.

Best wishes with finding what will work best in your home to share scripture stories with your little ones! I would be delighted to hear your tips and learn from the scripture wins happening in your home if you want to share in the comments!
